Survival Instinct

Long time readers know I put Nina to bed every night with a handful of songs. One night a few months back, she/we got a hopeless case of the giggles while I was singing. Tonight, she literally brought tears of joy to my eyes. I was at the beginning of my second song -- Small Brown Seed -- and suddenly she was singing with me, except that it was sort of like punctuation of the accented words in each line, sort of like

mnmnmn mnmnmn mphff SEED
mwem mnmnf mfmw EAWTH
mem mum me ma me DESIEW

and so on... and she knew every song in order, started when I started. I was so startled -- I've wondered for quite awhile if she was really listening, if the words were sinking in. I guess I know now. My eyes filled with tears of joy and I was smiling so widely she was singing better than me half the time, except when we both dissolved into giggles.

She's such a kook -- and the past few weeks have been so hard with her, I really needed that tonight. Little stinker.
