Pre-Movie Announcements
Cross-posted from my other journal: I can't help it: when I see a good idea, I have to copy it:
I had a weird dream this morning -- I was at camp with my Reclaiming community, and we decided to go to a movie. THe movie theater was pretty cool, I must say, because it provided beds for maximum movie-watching comfort. So we're all laying in these white-sheeted double beds waiting for the movie to start. Because it was a Reclaiming community, several people were nekkid under the sheets. Not doing anything, mind you, but comfortably nude. As we're laying there, these Other Folks come in -- definitely locals, and we're some place in the South. They pull up chairs next to us and look expectantly at the screen. They're friendly enough, if a little loud, and anyone within earshot can hear that they're waiting for someone to join them. Finally, the noise of the projector starts, the screen flickers and guess what pre-movie announcement we are treated to? A reading of the Ten Commandments, followed by a warning against Bacchanal Night (subtitled "Hell Night")! My community members and I look at each other in disbelief and I start to get up to object -- and to educate -- and then realize I am naked. So I fumble around to get my clothes on under the sheets -- because I don't want to offend the Other Folks -- and once dressed, begin to stand to speak my piece. As I'm standing, the Other Folks noisily leave the theater to find their lost compadre. Then I woke up.
Hm. I've been thinking recently about the importance of many of the things our community says and how they need to be heard by the outside world. I've also thought about how extreme statements can polarize people and make them unwilling to hear anything I have to say. I feel this dream is connected to that dilemma, but what I can't tell is, does the dream indicate they wouldn't listen even if I stopped to put on my clothes, or does it say I need to start out "dressed like them" to be heard?
